House panel seeks BIR briefing on fake receipts modus

The House Committee on Ways and Means will summon Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) officials to provide a briefing regarding the reported fake receipts modus, which some companies allegedly utilized to reduce the taxes they need to pay.

The briefing will be called to provide lawmakers with the big picture of the modus being linked to Benterprise International Inc., of World Balance scion Bernard Chong.

The panel is also expected to discuss the actions taken by the BIR and explore other measures needed to put an end to the use of fake receipts to avoid tax payments.

Like in previous briefings and hearings, the Ways and Means committee is expected to live-stream the meeting on social media.

The committee has jurisdiction on all matters directly and principally relating to the fiscal, monetary, and financial affairs of the national government including tariff, taxation, revenues, borrowing, credit, and bonded indebtedness.

Last Wednesday, the BIR filed criminal complaints before the Department of Justice (DOJ) against companies that bought counterfeit receipts from Brenterprise International Inc., a company that was subjected to a raid on December 16, 2022.

BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr., who led the filing of the cases, said the accused were clients of a syndicate that sell original receipts to those who wanted to reduce their tax liabilities.
