Migz Zubiri fumes at China for ‘wanton destruction’ of coral reefs

Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri is outraged at the destruction of coral beds in Rozul Reef and Escoda Shoal, where Chinese maritime militia vessels were last spotted by the Philippine Coast Guard.

“This is a wanton destruction of our future food security areas. I am really angry with what they are doing,” Zubiri said on Monday (Sept. 18).

Zubiri appealed to the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines to call on its maritime militia posing as fishing vessels “to put a stop on this wanton destruction.”

“This is not a destruction only on the Philippine side, but for the whole world,” Zubiri said.

“It’s for the whole world because the species of fish that breed there are not only being harvested by Filipino fishermen, but also harvested by Malaysian fishermen, Vietnamese fishermen, even Chinese fishermen,” he added.

The destruction of marine resources by the Chinese threatens the food security of other countries, according to Zubiri.

“So it is for the good of the world if our coral reefs are protected. That’s why I’m really very mad,” he added.

Zubiri suspected that the massive harvesting of coral reefs is part of China’s plan to illegally reclaim that part of the West Philippine Sea in the South China Sea.

“It’s possible. That has been their guidebook and playbook since the beginning where they want to destroy an area first and then they reclaim it,” Zubiri said.
