Facts only! Koko Pimentel wants better poverty data collection

November 20, 2023

Senator Aquilino Pimentel III is calling on the national government to improve its poverty data collection so that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. can fulfill his promise of bringing down poverty incidence to single digit.

Pimentel raised this issue after finding out during the budget hearing of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) that of the total 20 million households in the country, 6 million households were considered poor, and 4.4 million households are served by the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino program.

Based on that data, the poverty rate in the country should be at 30 percent, Pimentel said in his interpellation of the DSWD budget on Thursday (Nov. 16).

But the President in his first State of the Nation Address mentioned his promise to bring down the poverty rate to at least nine percent or below at the end of his term.

Pimentel questioned the basis of the President’s promise to bring it down to single digit after six years if the poverty rate in the country is as high as 30 percent.

The Senate minority leader said he is inclined to believe the poverty rate based on DSWD figures more than the poverty incidence given by the Philippine Statistics Authority, because the DSWD got its figures on ground.

“If the DSWD figures are to be believed, the poverty rate should be at 30 percent. How can you bring it down (to single digit) at the end of his term?” Pimentel said.

Pimentel said he wanted the administration to succeed by first having correct poverty data.

“Let’s help the administration by feeding him (the President) correct figures. May factual figures naman po na mga figures,” Pimentel said.
