DMW gets P15.3 billion for OFW services

November 21, 2023

By Prince Golez

The national government has allocated P15.3 billion to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) to provide more substantial assistance and projects for Filipino migrant workers in the proposed 2024 budget.

“They are our heroes. Dapat lang na sila po ay matulungan at maalalayan, lalo na sa panahon ng krisis. Katuwang po nila kami sa DBM. Katuwang po nila ang pamahalaan,” Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman said in a news release.

Pangandaman said the budget proposal also includes funding for the OWWA Emergency Repatriation Program, with a P9.7 billion to assist overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who are forcibly repatriated.

The Balik Pinas, Balik Hanapbuhay Program, a package of livelihood support intended to provide immediate relief to returning OFWs, will get P440.115 million, a P9 million increase, she added.

The program provides entrepreneurship development training and cash assistance amounting to P20,000 as start-up or additional capital.

The DBM said that an additional P227.995 million has been set aside for the Tulong Pangkabuhayan sa Pag-Unlad ng Samahang-OFWs, which aids the formation, enhancement, or restoration of livelihood projects of OFW organizations.

A total of P18 million will also be allocated to the OFW Enterprise Development and Loan Program to empower families of OFWs with viable business enterprises and to provide them with a steady income stream, added Pangandaman.
