612 inmates freed due to GCTA surrender as of Sept. 16


More of the 1,914 freed inmates have returned to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), said Justice Undersecretary Markk Perete on Monday (September 16).

“As of 9:30 this morning, 612 prematurely released PDLs (persons deprived) of liberty) have surrendered and are in the custody of BuCor,” he told reporters.

The 1,914 inmates were freed since 2013 due to their good conduct time allowance (GCTA).

It was in 2013 Republic Act 10592, which increased the GCTAs of inmates, was passed.

However, President Rodrigo Duterte called back the released inmates due to concerns that included among them were undeserving convicts.

Duterte gave them until Sept. 19 to surrender or face arrest which he warned could lead to their deaths if they resist..
