The number of foreign students going to the Philippines has dropped by 75 percent in 2020 due to the pandemic, Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Jaime Morente admitted.
“Restrictions on the entry of foreigners and suspension of face-to-face classes due to the pandemic naturally caused a decline in the number of alien enrollees in Philippine schools,” Morente said in a statement.
“Many of those who intended to come here and study had no choice but to forego their plans,” he lamented.
Morente said BI records showed that only 1,254 foreigners applied for student visas in 2020.
While, there were 4,758 foreigners who applied for student visas in 2019.
Aside from this, Morente also said that foreign students who renewed their visas also dropped by 31 percent.
He said there were only 7,170 foreigners who renewed their student visas in 2020 compared to the 10,433 who extended their visas in 2019.
