A la Alcatraz? Guevarra open to building new prison for heinous crimes convicts
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said he is open to Senate proposals to erect prisons exclusive to heinous crimes inmates.
“The DOJ will support any and all bills aiming to decongest and modernize our prison facilities,” he stated on Tuesday (Sept. 24).
The Secretary cited that funding for the building of such facilities could come from “the privatization of the sellable portions of the NBP (New Bilibid Prison) property.”
The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has been the center of the controversy concerning the release of inmates because of good conduct time allowance (GCTA) including convicts of heinous crimes who are unqualified to benefit.
Several Senate committees have already filed Senate Bill No. 1055 which proposed the erection of three prisons exclusive for heinous crimes inmates.
The bill also proposed that the justice secretary will determine where the three prisons will be built in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
