Vice President Leni Robredo is confident that more candidates from the “Otso Diretso” opposition coalition will break into the “Magic 12” winning circle in voter preference surveys before the May 13 elections.
Robredo on Wednesday (February 6) said there’s ample time for the opposition senatorial candidates to improve their survey ranking since the campaign season is just about to start.
“Ngayon, ano pa lang naman, kapapasok pa lang ng February, marami pang oras para magpakilala. Confident naman ako na kapag nakilala iyong mga kandidato natin, talagang natatangi naman sila kumpara sa iba,” she said.
Robredo made the remark in response to a question on what she feels that only two “Otso Diretso” candidates have a chance of winning based on the results of latest pre-election voter preference surveys: re-electionist Senator Bam Aquino and former senator Mar Roxas.
Aside from Roxas and Aquino, the “Otso Diretso” is composed of Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano and former House member Erin Tañada, lawyers Chel Diokno, Pilo Hilbay, and Romulo Macalintal, as well as Muslim civic leader Samira Gutoc.
Robredo said that while surveys are informative, it does not predict the outcome of the elections.
She said the results of voter preference polls in the senatorial race reminded her of her journey to the vice presidency.
“Noong ako iyong kandidato, parang iyong mga kandidato din natin ngayon: tinitingnan ng lahat na walang pag-asa, hindi masyadong pinapansin dahil mababa sa surveys. Pero sa campaign period, nakaya namang humabol,” the Vice President said.
