Former Quezon Rep. Erin Tañada is hoping President Duterte would show the same humility to the victims of his government’s war on illegal drugs following his public apology to the Hong Kong victims of a Manila hostage tragedy in 2010.

“I applaud PDu30s apology to HK hostage victims of 2010. He should show the same humility and compassion to his own countrymen who are victims or ‘collateral’ victims to the War on Drugs specially the minors,” Tañada tweeted.

The President earlier made a public apology for the botched rescue of the Hong Kong tourists during a hostage-taking incident eight years ago. Nine people were killed during the hostage crisis but Duterte’s predecessor refused to apologize or take blame for the incident.

”On behalf of the people of the Philippines, may I apologise and say sorry that the incident happened and as humanly possible I would like to make this guarantee – it will never happen again,” Duterte said before a gathering of Filipino workers in Hong Kong last Thursday.
