Communications Secretary Martin Andanar on Monday (Jan. 16) practically absolved the government of any hand in the rise of the number of Filipinos who see themselves as poor or hungry by pinning the blame on typhoons.

In a statement, Andanar said the “stronger than usual typhoons” which hit Luzon towards the end of 2016 was a factor why Filipinos’ self-rated poverty went up to 44 percent from 42 percent, according to a Social Weather Stations survey.

The same poll also found that 34 percent of the respondents consider their families as “food poor,” up from 30 percent.

Andanar noted that Typhoon Karen affected thousands of hectares of agricultural lands in Ilocos, Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Luzon and CALBARZON while Typhoon Lawin took a toll on the houses and crops in Northern Luzon.
