Ain’t the real boss: Undersecretary calls shots at dep’t instead of chief
Cabinet Secretary (CS) may be the titular head of a government agency (GA), but Undersecretary (US) is the real boss.
Politiko’s source said the heads of all offices within GA report to US rather than GA, and he represents CA in several important engagements.
CS, though, doesn’t seem to mind as CS sees US as a son. Their relationship goes a long way since US worked with CS when the latter was first appointed to the government.
US’ closeness with CS made him develop a certain swagger, which he uses to his advantage. Is that a good thing? Better ask those who work at GA.
How long will US feel like a Secretary? As long as CS is in office, he will continue calling the shots.
