Ako lang meron niyan! Duterte credits Moro roots, anti-crime message for 2016 landslide win
President Rodrigo Duterte believes he won the 2016 presidential race by a huge margin because of his Moro heritage and strong message against criminality and illegal drugs.
In a speech in Davao City Friday (June 21), Duterte said his Moro heritage made him win votes in Mindanao.
“‘Yung pagka-konti kong pagka-Maranao gave me the reason for the landslide sa lahat. Sa lahat ng lugar ng mga Moro,” he said during the oath taking of his son Sebastian as vice mayor in Davao City.
Duterte said his vow to stamp out crime and illegal drugs was also a hit among voters.
“Iyong iba naman ang tingin ko talaga ang message na dinala ko sa tao and what was it? Corruption, criminality, droga, pati lahat na. So sabi ko sa corruption hintuan na ninyo,” he said.
Duterte beat four other presidential aspirants in 2016: former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, Senators Miriam Defensor Santiago and Grace Poe, and Vice President Jejomar Binay.
