Albee Benitez wants Jan. 25 declared a holiday for ‘fallen 44’
A Visayan lawmaker wants Jan. 25 to be declared as a National Day of Remembrance for the 44 Special Action Force (SAF) members who were killed in a covert anti-terror raid in Mamasapano, Maguindanao and all other cops who died in the line of duty.
In filing House Bill 5383, Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo “Albee” Benitez said having a National Day of Remembrance will give Filipinos opportunity to honor the lives and heroism of the police force.
“The National Day of Remembrance shall ensure that the nation continues to honor the lives and heroism of the members of the police force who were killed in action and pay respect and gratitude to the entire police force whose lives are at risks as they perform their jobs,” said Benitez, chair of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development.
The lawmaker said the gallantry shown by the 44 SAF commandos who died in Mamasapano last Jan. 25 should not only be remembered now, but also in the future for generations of Filipinos to come.
But he noted that aside from the 44 SAF commandos, it is also important that Filipinos remember the bravery of other police officers who died while doing their jobs.
Under Benitez’s proposal, the National Day of Remembrance shall be a working holiday.
