Alexandria Ocasio Cortez delivers sick burn to Ivanka Trump on living wage: I know what it’s like to work for tips
New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez just checked Ivanka Trump’s feeling of white privilege by recalling her days working for hourly wages.
In a tweet posted Wednesday (February 27), Ocasio Cortez said her knowledge on the issue of living wages wasn’t “2nd-hand.” The remark appears to be directed at Ivanka, whose father, US President Donald Trump, was at the helm of a business empire before winning the 2016 elections.
“As a person who actually worked for tips & hourly wages in my life, instead of having to learn about it 2nd-hand, I can tell you that most people want to be paid enough to live,” Ocasio Cortez said.
“A living wage isn’t a gift, it’s a right. Workers are often paid far less than the value they create,” the congresswoman added.
Ocasio Cortez’s tweet was accompanied by a link to an article posted by the website Axios, which quoted Ivanka as saying that “most people” do not support the proposal for a guaranteed minimum wage.
“People want to work for what they get. So, I think that this idea of a guaranteed minimum is not something most people want,” Ivanka said.
Ocasio Cortez worked as a bartender before becoming the youngest congresswoman in US history last year.
