All’s well that ends well? Guevarra: BuCor to start releasing valid GCTA surrenderees
The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) is expected to start releasing this Thursday (Sept. 26) some of the over 2,000 convicts who surrendered, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said.
“Several will be released today,” Guevarra told reporters on Thursday.
“We really hope that it could have been earlier,” he added.
The Secretary lamented “hindi maayos ang record keeping ng BuCor so we do not want to commit mistakes here at the expense of medyo using up more time.”
“We just want to make sure na yung ia-allow namin na lumabas ay talagang karapat dapat na lumabas at hindi mananatili any day longer sa loob,” he said.
There have been 2,221 surrenderers who heeded the order of President Rodrigo Duterte to surrender by September 19.
This is already way more than the 1,914 names in the list of the BuCor of convicts who were released because of good conduct time allowance (GCTA).
Duterte ordered the surrender to address concerns that there were undeserving inmates were among those released.
