Alvarez rising: Will Speaker rule PDP-Laban after Koko loses Senate presidency?

POLITIKO - The bible of Philippine Politics

Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III’s term as PDP-Laban president is now in peril following his resignation as Senate President.

Sources told Politiko there’s a big chance that party members will move to replace Pimentel with House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez following the reorganization at the Senate.

Alvarez is currently PDP-Laban’s Secretary General.

Should Alvarez’s election as PDP-Laban push through, he will become more powerful since he not only has control of the house, but of the ruling party as well.

Pimentel announced his resignation as Senate President Monday (May 21).

Despite being President Rodrigo Duterte’s allies, there’s been talk about a leadership struggle between Pimentel and Alvarez inside PDP-Laban for months.

Both lawmakers had separate lists of preferred senatorial candidates, with Alvarez’s list featuring more House members, while Pimentel’s had senators who do not belong to PDP-Laban.

Alvarez had also attacked the Senate under Pimentel’s watch, calling it the “mabagal na kapulungan” over its supposed inability to act swiftly on bills.
