Government chief peace negotiator Miriam Coronel-Ferrer hesitated to inform Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita Deles of the Mamasapano encounter on January 25 because the Cabinet Secretary was “resting.”
In Tuesday’s Senate hearing on the Mamasapano incident, Ferrer told the committee on public order that she knew of the encounter between the Special Action Force (SAF), and members of both the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) as early as 7:30 a.m.
“The information was still emerging at 7:30 a.m. Hindi pa buo yung information until na-organize na yung crisis committee at 11 a.m. and at that time, may kaliwanagan na yung nangyari,” she said upon the questioning of Senator Nancy Binay.
Despite this, however, Ferrer waited until 5 p.m. to inform Deles of the situation.
“Hindi ko pa rin (tinawagan) kasi that was a Sunday and we give some time for our secretaries to rest on a sunday pero 5 o’clock nakuha na natin ang information that’s when we started talking. She informed me the president was aware of the situation,” Ferrer said.
To which Binay reacted: “Pinagpahinga niyo muna si Secreary Deles kahit alam niyo na nagpapatayan sa Mamasapano when Secretary Deles has access to the President para mafeed din niya ng tamang information?”
In the course of the Senate hearings, it was disclosed that President Aquino was getting information directly from then-suspended police chief Director General Alan Purisima.
Despite serving his suspension, Purisima was supposedly still calling the shots in the bloody police operation against terrorists Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan, and Basit Usman.
