Ampatuan involved in Mamasapano massacre

The armed group of Datu Bahnarin Ampatuan was among those responsible for the massacre of the 44 elite police troops in the town of Mamasapano, Maguindanao last week.

Aside from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and its breakaway faction, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), Bahnarin’s private armed group also reportedly joined the gunfight against the members of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF). This was confirmed to ABS-CBN News.

Bahnarin, also involved in the gruesome 2009 Maguindanao massacre, is the brother of Mamasapano mayor Benzar Ampatuan. The two were rivals in the mayoralty post in the 2010 elections.

Benzar however doubted his brother’s participation in the Mamasapano incident.

“Napaka-imposible naman na makipaghalubilo siya sa kung kani-kaninong grupo especially sa BIFF, and also from Basit Usman dahil mismong si Basit Usman pinagtangkaan ang buhay ng lolo ko,” he said.

Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan and foreign-trained Filipino bomb maker Usman were the targets of the botched police operation which killed 44 PNP-SAF members.
