In order to develop the athletic potential of young Filipinos, Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara on Tuesday called for the establishment of sports facilities at the grassroots level.
In a statement, Angara said having sports facilities at the barangay level would not only enhance the athletic skills of the youth but would also help promote a healthy lifestyle among adults.
“Regarding grassroots development, kailangan down to the barangay level mayroon tayong pasilidad,” said Angara, who chairs the Senate Committee on Games, Amusement and Sports.
He cited Singapore as example where construction of sports facilities is already integrated in their building developments.
“Naka-integrate doon sa planning nila yung sports facilities, so each series of five tower blocks sa Singapore, meron silang swimming pool at gym, so it’s a lifestyle. That really means imbibing a lifestyle down to the barangay level,” he explained.
He lamented the increasing number of Filipinos dying due to lifestyle-related diseases.
“We see a lot of 40-year-olds dying from heart disease, diabetes and other lifestyle diseases. Hindi dapat mangyari ‘yan kung merong sufficient exercise and wellness,” he stressed.
“So dapat, holistic ‘yung pagtrato natin diyan sa problemang ‘yan. We’ll have a healthier citizenry if we have sports facilities at the barangay level. I think that should be one emphasis going forward,” he added.
