Ano pa hinihintay niyo? Lagman says Sandiganbayan should arrest Imelda ASAP

Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman said the Sandiganbayan should be compelled to order the arrest of former First Lady Imelda Marcos after handing down a guilty verdict on her graft case last Friday.

“Since the Sandiganbayan has forfeited the bail bond of (Ilocos Norte) Rep. Imelda Marcos for her and her lawyer’s unjustified failure to appear during the promulgation of the decision in her graft cases, the issuance of a warrant of arrest by the anti-graft court against Marcos is a matter of course,” Lagman said ina statement. “The forfeiture of Marcos’ bail bond quashed her temporary liberty and justifies her arrest and detention pending the restoration of her bail bond or her posting of a new one subject to the discretion of the Sandiganbayan,” said Lagman. Marcos did not attend a single hearing of her case filed way back in 1992 and she was not around when the Sandiganbayan sentenced her to up to 77 years in jail and perpetually banned her from holding public office.

Majority Leader Rolando Andaya Jr. on Monday said the House of Representatives would respect and abide by the Sandiganbayan decision on Marcos.

“While there are remedies available to all persons under our criminal justice system, including but not limited to provisional remedies and appeal, the House will respect and abide by the decision of the Sandiganbayan,” Andaya said in a message to House reporters.

Marcos earlier said her legal counsel would file a motion for reconsideration on the anti-graft court’s decision.

“Unfortunately, my Attorney of Record, Atty. Robert Sison, has been indisposed and is presently confined at the Asian hospital,” Marcos said.

“Justice Lolong Lazaro, who has previously appeared as counsel in this case, will act as my counsel in the interim. He is presently studying the decision and has advised us that he intends to file a Motion for Reconsideration,” she added. (PNA)
