Anong meron? Aguirre baffled at Morales’s refusal to probe De Lima
Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II is stumped as to why Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales refuses to investigate Senator Leila De Lima over her alleged involvement in the narcotics trade at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP).
Even though witnesses including government officials and Bilibid inmates have testified about De Lima’s acceptance of drug money, Aguirre noted that Morales had declared these statements as “mere allegations.”
“Kaya hindi ko po alam kung bakit niya sinasabi and I believe that it is the Ombudsman herself who could explain her stand,” he said.
For his part, Aguirre believes that the drug accusations against De Lima are “not just mere allegations.”
“These are accusations although testimonial evidence lamang. Pero whether it is testimonial evidence, these are evidence against somebody for being charged of the violation of the Dangerous Drugs Act,” explained the Secretary.
Fortunately, Aguirre pointed out that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has concurrent jurisdiction and is currently conducting preliminary investigations on the criminal complaints filed against De Lima.
