House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Tuesday insisted she had no plans of endorsing any of the candidates hoping to be her successor.
“I told you, I am not endorsing (anyone),” she told reporters when pressed if she was planning to back the candidacy of incoming Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, president of Lakas-CMD, a party founded and led by Arroyo.
The former President joined the ruling PDP-Laban last year.
Arroyo was also mum on whether she would support Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, who is touted as the favored Speaker candidate of presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.
Sara Duterte is rumored to be responsible for Arroyo’s rise as the first Speaker. Arroyo and her allies engineered a coup that ousted then Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez as House leader.
Alvarez, reelected congressman of Davao del Norte, has declared his intention to try to reclaim the seat.
Other candidates for Speaker are former DFA Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano of Nacionalista Party and Pampanga Rep. Dong Gonzalez, also of PDP-Laban.
