The bible of Philippine politics

Ashamed of being an Aquino? Sen. Aquino drops surname in PRs, tweets

Without a doubt, Aquino is probably the most powerful political family in the Philippines, having produced two Presidents and three senators in contemporary Philippine history.

Despite the prominence associated with being an Aquino, Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV has opted to ditch his surname in press releases and tweets.

Quotes and and tweets coming from the lawmaker are now attributed to “Sen. Bam,” without any mention of his Aquino lineage.

Is Aquino trying to follow in the footsteps of Senate Majority Leader Vicente “Tito” Sotto III who’s also fondly known as Tito Sen?

Perhaps the senator is just trying to carve an identity distinct from his equally popular relatives.

But that would be hard to do considering how he milked his surname for political fame. See the horn rimmed glasses? It’s reminiscent of what his late uncle, former senator Benigno Aquino Jr., wore when he was alive.

Whatever Aquino’s intentions may be for dropping Aquino from his publicity materials, he’d be hard pressed to completely break away from his family’s reputation and legacy.
