Astang siga pa rin! Group claims Palparan living ‘privileged life’ inside Bilibid
A group has questioned why retired Army Maj. Gen. Jovito Palparan has not been transferred to the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.
“Under the Duterte regime, the culture of impunity favors the transgressor even in jail,” said Desaparecidos member Erlinda Cadapan, mother of missing University of the Philippines (UP) student Sherlyn Cadapan, in a statement.
“It is an insufferable insult to us the families of victims of Palparan that he continues to escape the consequences of his brutality,” she stressed.
Desaparecidos, an organization of families and victims of enforced disappearance, said Palparan continue to stay at the Bilibid’s Directorate for Reception and Diagnostics (DRD) beyond the 60 days allowed under the rules.
Palparan was convicted back in 2018 for kidnapping and serious illegal detention for the disappearance of Sherlyn and fellow UP student Karen Empeno.
“There is no doubt that Palparan is living a privileged life inside the NBP, but it is unspeakable for Palparan to go scot-free if the Court of Appeals reverse the Court’s ruling of life sentence for the butcher,” said Conception Empeno, mother of Karen.
Desaparecidos lamented the trial court has already denied the petition of the victims’ families to remove Palparan from the DRD.
Meanwhile, Desaparecidos expressed concerns of unseen hands preparing for the rehabilitation of Palparan.”
“We will be watching the resolution of the case of Palparan in the Court of Appeals because surely, Palparan could be an asset to this murderous regime,” assured Desaparecidos which noted that Palparan has appealed his conviction before the Court of Appeals.
