The Philippine National Police (PNP) has ordered a news blackout on the death of a 30-year-old doctor who worked at a facility for COVID-19 patients, Politiko has learned.
A police report obtained by Politiko identified the doctor as Police Captain Casey Gutierrez, who was assigned to the PNP Health Service unit detailed at the Philippine Sports Arena in Pasig City to attend to COVID-19 patients.
According to the police report, Gutierrez died after experiencing “chemical inhalation while undergoing decontamination process.”
Politiko’s source said PNP officials barred Gutierrez’s family from speaking on his death.
Based on the police report, Gutierrez was with five other members of the medical staff when they inhaled chemicals at the PhilSports Arena.
“The doctor (Casey) and other five medical staff had a chemical inhalation while undergoing decontamination process of their PPE after the admission of patients on May 24, 2020 at about 9:00 p.m,” the report read.
Gutierrez and his colleagues were brought to the PNP hospital in Camp Crame for first aid but he was the only one confined. His X-ray results showed he had pneumonitis.
“On the second day,it was observed by the attending internal medicine doctor, Police Major Joy Santos, that the pneumonitis was progressing and she decided to refer the subject to LCP for further evaluation and management,” the report read.
Gutierrez died before midnight of May 30.
