Ayusan na! Sara, Pulong meet with frontrunners for Speaker
Is a resolution to the tug of war over the speakership looming soon?
Barely two weeks left before the 18th Congress opens, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and her brother, Congressman Paolo “Pulong” Duterte, met with three frontrunners in the speakership race Saturday (July 6).
Summoned to the meeting with the Duterte siblings in Davao City were Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, Taguig Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco.
Pulong described the meeting in a statement as “cordial, where they discussed the progress of the country.”
Earlier in the day, Pulong said he was withdrawing from the speakership race after consulting with his father, President Rodrigo Duterte.
The presidential son said he was throwing his support instead behind Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab, the candidate for Speaker of Sara’s political party, Hugpong ng Pagbabago.
The Duterte siblings have formed the Duterte Coalition in hopes of uniting the House amid the tense speakership contest.
They asked Romualdez, Cayetano and Velasco to join the coalition.
Of the three speakership contenders, only Cayetano has yet to respond to the Duterte siblings’ invitation to join the Duterte Coalition.
