President Rodrigo Duterte is hoping to meet Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe again to rejuvenate the Philippines’ bilateral relations with Japan.
Duterte made the remark during a courtesy visit of Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono to the President in Davao City last Saturday.
“The President further expressed his desire to meet PM Abe again to discuss developments in bilateral ties and assess ways of moving forward together on shared concerns,” said spokesperson Salvador Panelo on Monday.
Panelo said Duterte also underscored the need to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries, particularly in addressing transnational crimes and conventional and emerging regional threats.
The chief executive also thanked Japan, which he described as a “true friend and proven partner,” for its involvement in the Duterte administration’s ambitious “Build, Build, Build” program.
Kono, who is in the country for a three-day official beginning February 9, led the inauguration of Japan’s Consulate General in Davao.
