President Rodrigo Duterte has suspended the use of special single-digit plates for the luxury vehicles of his Cabinet Secretaries.
Duterte has banned the number “6” plates to prevent his Cabinet Secretaries or their relatives and security from abusing their use on traffic-choked roads in Metro Manila. He did not say if the ban als covered Cabinet Undersecretaries who use the number “12” protocol plate.
Duterte, however, said the ban does not include the protocol plates issued to the Vice President (2), Senate President (3), House Speaker (4), Chief Justice (5), senators (7), congressmen (8), associate justices (9), Court of Appeals judges and Solicitor General (10), Comelec Chair (11), AFP and PNP Chief (14) and Regional Trial Court judges (16).
In a speech in Bahrain, Duterte said: “Binawal ko ‘yung mga number, no numbered plate. Tiwala kayong mga congressman because we are separate. Ito ‘yung ano natin eh, executive. Ako ‘yung head. Judiciary, Supreme Court, Congress. Wala kaming pakialam. Pero dito sa akin, ‘di na sila makagamit ng six. Cabinet members kasi six eh,” said Duterte.
Duterte said he was averse to traveling on the road in Metro Manila because it would only mean more traffic and inconveniences to drivers and pedestrians as his Presidential Security Group would shut down intersections and make counter flow just to ensure his entourage’s swift travel.
