President Rodrigo Duterte wants the town of Daraga, Albay placed under the Commission on Elections’ control following the murder of Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Rodel Batocabe last week.
In an interview after attending Batocabe’s wake Wednesday (December 26), Duterte said he has called Comelec chair Sheriff Abas regarding his plan.
“Anyway, there’s really lawlessness and ‘yung violent crimes during election, I just called the chairman of the Comelec and recommended to him to place Daraga under Comelec control,” he said.
Duterte vowed that the elections in Daraga will be peaceful, saying he will not allow violence to be the norm under his watch.
“You can rest assure that the Daraga would be peaceful during the entire election,” he said.
The President reiterated the need to return to the so-called “Alunan Doctrine,” which bans politikos and their bodyguards from carrying long firearms except if they are given a permit by the Comelec.
“So lahat ‘yan ngayon is Comelec control. So si — it’s the office that has the final say of what to do in the matter of law and order,” he said.
Batocabe was shot dead on December 22 in Barangay Burgos after holding a gift-giving event. His security aide was also killed in the incident.
The police are still investigating the crime and hunting his killers down.
