A former police intelligence officer is claiming that Muslim rebels used Barrett .50-cal sniper rifles in picking apart the police commandos pursuing two wanted terrorist-bombers in Mamasapano, Maguindanao.
Rodolfo “Boggie” Mendoza Jr., president of the Philippine Institute for Peace Terrorism Violence Research (PIPVTR), told ANC’s Karen Davila that based on the injuries suffered by the 44 dead Special Action Force operatives, they were killed by sniper fire from both the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the BangsamoroIslamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF).
“Their faces were blown apart, their limbs were shattered, that’s the mark of a Barrett Caliber .50, the weapon of choice ofMILF-BIFF snipers,” said Mendoza.
Peace adviser Ging Deles confirmed that the shattered skulls of the dead SAF aaas caused by high-powered weapons.
The SAF contingent were pinned by the joint contingent of the MILF-BIFF Sunday morning shortly after raiding the lairs of Malaysian terrorist Zulkipli bin Hir alias Marwan and Filipino Basit Usman, both bomb experts linked to the Jemaah Islamiya terror cell. Usman was reportedly killed by the SAF but Usman fought back forced the SAFretreat.
The Barrett .50-cal is a a semi-automatic caliber sniper rifle formally known as the Barret M82. It can kill with one shot in the chest, next or head at a maximum effective range of 1,800 meters. But its loud and distinctive firing sound is a disadvantage as it can give away the user’s position.
