Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III has questioned the motive of the House of Representatives for passing a provisional franchise for ABS-CBN that is only good until October 31 this year.
In a radio interview Thursday (May 14), Sotto said ABS-CBN should be given a 25-year franchise if it meets all necessary requirements.
“Ang hindi ko maintindihan, ang gusto kong tanungin, ‘yung franchise na ina-approve ng House ay five months. Saan ka nakarinig ng five months na franchise? 25 years kung 25 years, bakit five months?” he said.
Sotto said he will advise Senator Sherwin Gatchalian to tread carefully in discussing ABS-CBN’s franchise application next week as the House’s proposal may contain loopholes.
Gatchalian will lead the Senate committee on public services’ hearing on ABS-CBN’s franchise application because its chairperson, Senator Grace Poe, inhibited due to conflict of interest.
“Tatawagan ko rin si Sherwin sasabihin ko medyo mag-iingat ka baka may butas na makita kung sino-sino diyan,” Sotto said.
The Senate committee hearing on ABS-CBN’s franchise application is scheduled on May 19.
