Ba’t laging biro ang babae? Korina asks Duterte: Stop sexist jokes
Broadcaster Korina Sanchez has asked President Rodrigo Duterte to stop poking fun at women in his speeches.
In her January 31 column for Pilipino Star Ngayon, Sanchez took offense at Duterte’s joke during a business forum in India that he’d like to lure tourists to the Philippines using 42 virgins if Muslim extremists can entice followers with the promise of having 42 virgins in heaven.
“Baka naman puwedeng itigil na ang mga ganyang biro. Lagi na lang nalalagay sa sitwasyon na kagamitan lang ng lalaki ang mga babae, she said.
“’Just a joke’ o kaya’y ‘Said in jest’ na naman ang paliwanag ng Palasyo. Lahat na lang ba ay biro, ‘said in jest,’ kapag mga babae na ang pinag-uusapan?” Sanchez asked.
The ABS-CBN journalist wondered if the Indian businessmen, who supposedly laughed at Duterte’s joke, remembered the incidents of rape and sexual violence that happened in the country over the past few years.
She recalled the case of 23-year-old Jyoti Singh, who was raped and hurt by six men in 2012. Singh eventually died from the wounds she sustained.
Referring to the incidents of rape against women in India, Sanchez said: “Dapat nga siguro may nagpaalala sa mga negosyanteng Indiyano na nagtawanan sa mga insidente ng panggagahasa sa kanilang bansa.”
