Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa is convinced that convicted murderer and rapist Antonio Sanchez has changed for the better.
Dela Rosa told reporters Thursday (August 22) that reports of Sanchez’s supposed transformation already reached him when he was chief of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).
“Sabi andyan pa sir, mabait na sir, di na siga, malumanay na, changed man na,” he said.
Dela Rosa claimed that Sanchez, a former mayor of Calauan, Laguna, shifted to wearing women’s clothing while inside the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.
“Sinabi lang sa akin na ganoon nga, changed man na siya (Sanchez). Naka-palda, lipstick. Hawak niya palagi Bibliya, rosary,” he said.
Dela Rosa said Sanchez’s supposed cross dressing is proof he has changed.
“The mere fact na naka-palda ka, naka-lipstick ka, mabait ka na. May hawak na Bibliya palagi tapos naka-palda naka-lipstick, bagay ba siya magsiga-siga roon?” he said.
Sanchez was sentenced to spend seven terms of reclusion perpetua or 40-year imprisonment over the rape and killing of Eileen Sarmenta, a student at the University of the Philippines Los Baños in 1993.
He was also found guilty of killing Allan Gomez, Sarmenta’s companion.
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra earlier said Sanchez may be released soon because of a Supreme Court ruling allowing for the retroactive application of a new law for recomputing an inmate’s good conduct time allowance (GCTA).
Dela Rosa said that while he believes Sanchez deserves the death penalty, the law should be followed.
“Bakit natin ie-exempt si Sanchez kung galit tayong lahat sa kanya eh? Kung eligible naman siya para maka-avail ng GCTA na ‘yan, batas-batas lang tayo,” he said.
