Batocabe effect: Bersamin eyes SC’s own probe into abogados’ killings
Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin has joined calls to an end of the killing of lawyers in the country following the murder of Ako Bicol party-list Representative Rodel Batocabe.
SC spokesman and Court Administrator Midas Marquez said Bersamin is “condemning in the strongest possible terms the recent spate of killings of lawyers, including judges.”
With this, Marquez said the chief justice “calls on the concerned authorities to put an immediate stop to these senseless acts of violence within the bounds of the law, and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
The SC spokesman said Bersamin agrees with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) in having the high tribunal conduct a probe of the incident and have a dialogue with law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety of lawyers.
“The Chief Justice will seek the concurrence of the Court in conducting an independent investigation and convening a dialogue between the members of the bar and the law enforcers,” Marquez said.
