Bawal ang pasaway! Bato Dela Rosa backs arrest of community quarantine violators
Police have the authority to arrest those who will resist the implementation of the community quarantine declared by President Rodrigo Duterte in Metro Manila amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa said.
In a statement Saturday (March 14), Dela Rosa said Filipinos should obey the government as it faces a global pandemic.
“This is a global emergency so bawal ang pasaway,” he said.
Dela Rosa, a former chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said everyone must make sacrifices to stop the number of COVID-19 cases from growing. He called the arrest of community quarantine a “necessary measure.”
“Arrest? Yes. Detention? No. After arrest send them back home,” the senator said.
The community quarantine in Metro Manila started Sunday (March 15) and will last until April 14. Filipinos from provinces are discouraged from going to Metro Manila unless they work in the capital or need to conduct important business.
The government also suspended work in several agencies under the executive branch, while employers in the private sector are encouraged to adopt a work-from-home arrangement.
