Bayan Muna to Panelo: Marcos also thought he was ‘saving democracy’
Bayan Muna chairman Neri Colmenares and Bayan Muna Rep. Eufemia Cullamat on Monday reacted strongly against Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo’s statement that martial law is a tool to save democracy.
In fact, according to Colmenares, the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos thought the same way.
“Yan din ang sabi ni Marcos noon. After thousands of deaths and arrests, Ferdinand Marcos who declared he was the savior of democracy was overthrown by the Filipino people. That is a lesson for future saviors of democracy pretenders,” said Colmenares.
Cullamat, on the other hand, was incredulous: “Martial law!? Tool to save democracy!? Democracy ba ang tumitinding pamamaslang,!? Pananakot!? Panunupil at pagpapatahimik sa mamamayang nanawagan sa tunay na pagbabago na nakabatay sa pagpapaunlad sa local na industriya sa mga batayang pangangailangan ng mamamayan!?”
“Mukhang kailangan balikan ni Sec. Panelo ang tunay na nangyari sa kasaysayan at kung paano pinatay ng martial law ang demokrasya sa bansa,” she said.
They were reacting to Panelo’s statement on Sunday that: “Those who perceive that a declaration of martial law is antidemocratic is oblivious of the fact that its application is precisely the very tool to save the exercise of democracy.”
