This was the challenge of former Speaker Bebot Alvarez to Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte who claimed that he threatened to embarrass her after he demolished her Hugpong ng Pagbabago candidates in the 2019 elections, particularly Davao del Norte governor Anthony del Rosario.
“Gaito na lang para simple, halimbawa meron talagang video na sunabo ko ‘yun I will withdraw from the Speakership,” said Alvarez in an interview with ANC’s Karen Davila.
“Kasi hindi ko dapat sinabi ‘yun. ‘Pag nasabi ko man ‘yun, wala akong karapatan para tumakbong Speaker,” he added.
Duterte had claimed that Alvarez was caught offguard in a video boasting: “Ipapahiya ko (Alvarez) siya (Duterte).”
Alvarez won his reelection bid by beating Duterte’s , defeating the Floirendo-Del Rosario clan under the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP). Aside from del Rosario, Alvarez’s chief of staff, Edwin I. Jubahib, defeated Mr. del Rosario’s brother Rodolfo Jr. in the gubernatorial race. Del Rosario’s cousin, Antonio “Tonyboy” Floirendo Jr, lost to Alvarez’s man, Alan Dujali, int eh second district race.
Alvarez did not deny making the shaming threat but he only said it was “unlikely” as he had been careful about commenting on Duterte.
“Di ko talaga mataandaam saan ‘yung part kasi masaydo akong nagiingat. ‘Pag nabanggit na si Mayor, ‘di na ako nagcocomento. Very unlikely na sinabi ko ‘yun,” said Alvarez.
Alvarez had earned the ire of Duterte when he boasted that he could impeach Duterte’s father, President Rodrigo Duterte.
Sara engineered Alvarez’s ouster in the House (he was replaced by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo) in a tense and acrimonious takeover battle which unfolded just hours before the President’s State of the Nation Address in July 2018.
