Akbayan party-list Rep. Walden Bello believes the early cessation of the MRT’s operations today for repairs will only improve the train line’s deteriorating condition temporarily.
“This planned shutdown (of the MRT) is like changing the old tires of a car whose engine has gone bust,” he said on Friday.
The operations of MRT-3 are set to end at 9 p.m. today, or two hours earlier than its normal schedule, to give way for the replacement of railroad tracks between Magallanes and Taft Ave. stations. Train services will resume at 12 noon on Sunday.
Instead of spending for piecemeal repair works on the MRT, Bello urged the government to fully take over the operations and ownership of the train line from its private owner, MRT Corporation.
He slammed MRTC for tolerating the bad performance of maintenance companies, which he said skimped on repairs and never mulled on upgrading to newer trains.
“The government should take bolder action towards full management and ownership of MRT to prevent the gross mismanagement by the private sector and establish clear mechanisms of accountability,” Bello said.
