Saying “national prestige was at stake,” the House leadership has given Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao its blessing to skip attending plenary sessions so he can train for his May 2 mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. said the lower chamber understands Pacquiao needs plenty of time to train for his upcoming fight.
“He will, of course, be absent, but we will be very understanding, after all, we are proud of him and want to give all the space for his training,” he said.
Buhay party-list Rep. Lito Atienza, a long-time friend and supporter of Pacquiao, said Congress can do its part in helping Pacquiao train by not burdening him with the responsibility of attending plenary sessions.
By all means, Congress should give him special permission to miss session so he can concentrate on good training and fight,” he said.
Pacquiao is known as one of the perennial absentees in the 16th Congress, showing up for only four days at the plenary last year.
