Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin wants to be known as the chief justice who healed the judiciary following the divisive ruling which resulted in the ouster of former chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
“I wish to be remembered and known as the healing chief justice who brought stability and normalcy back to the judiciary and particularly to the SC,” he said during the occasion on the marking of his retirement held on October 11.
“Yes, the judiciary needed healing and it became my response as chief justce to initiate and ensure such healing,” said the chief justice who will retire this October 18.
Sereno was ousted after the SC voted 8-6 on May 11, 2018 to grant the quo warranto petition that Solicitor General Jose Calida filed against her.
Calida argued her appointment should have been void since she did not comply with the requirements of the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) to submit her statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).
Bersamin is the second chief justice named to the post by President Rodrigo Duterte after Sereno’s outster.
Prior Bersamin, retired chief justice Teresita Leonardo-De Castro held the seat from August, 2018 up to her retirement on October 8, 2018.
