The Philippines is emerging as crew change hub for seafarers in Asia, Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Jaime Morente said on Wednesday (Feb. 3).
Morente said BI records showed that the bureau has processed and cleared last year 112,000 seafarers who joined or left their ships.
Because of this, he said more immigration personnel have been deployed to six ports which have been designated as crew change hubs.
These are located in Manila, Bataan, Batangas, Subic, Cebu and Davao.
Meanwhile, Morente expressed support to the move of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to establish one-stop shops in these areas.
“We also welcome the DOTr’s move to establish one-stop shops in these ports which would facilitate crew changes,” he stated.
The BI chief said the BI recognizes the contribution of seafarers to the Philippine economy.
