Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente has vowed to take legal action against shipping agents involved in illegal activities and smear the name of the Bureau of Immigration (BI).
“We are studying possible legal action that we could take against these shipping agents that tarnish the name of the Bureau and commit these unscrupulous acts,” he said in a statement.
Morente said this was discovered following the conduct of an investigation at the Port of Capinpin in Bataan.
“We have monitored a social media post that reported an alleged corruption incident at the Bataan Port, wherein ships were said to be overcharged $600 for immigration boarding formalities,” said Morente.
“I immediately ordered an investigation following the said post,” he added.
BI Bataan Alien Control Officer Bayani Agosto Ferrer found that the questionable documents were signed by Conrado Bustamante and Armichael Policarpio.
“We have no employee with those names,” he reported.
The BI said the documents showed that the fake employees charged as much as P20,000 to an arriving vessel supposedly as payment for immigration inspection.
“They even had the audacity to give fake invoices, using the BI’s logo to be able to illegally charge these fees,” Ferrer said.
