Biazon urges gov’t to turn Pag-Asa Island into tourist destination

Muntinlupa Rep. Biazon on Wednesday urged the national government to seriously pursue the proposed development of Pag-Asa Island in the West Philippine Sea as a tourist destination.
Biazon said with the ongoing rehabilitation of the runway of Pag-Asa Island, it is best to heed to the suggestion of Defense Sec. Delfin Lorenzana that to develop the area as a premier tourist destination “to maximize” the investment government is putting into the island.
Biazon said converting Pag-Island into a tourism eco-zone is the best way “to assert our hold on the island in a non-military, non-confrontational way.”
“It would be advantageous to open it up to visits by tourists, with sustainable, eco-friendly policies in place,” said Biazon.
He added that the economic activity “would enable the government to somehow recover” the expenditures—the rehabilitation of the runway and erection of facilities on the island and provide funding for future developments.
Biazon, a seasoned scuba diver, said he is confident that Pag-Asa Island will become a prime destination for divers, “similar to other sites in the country like Tubbataha Reef, Apo Reef, and many others.”
“It will surely become one of the exciting dive sites of the Philippines which has already become famous worldwide because of its various excellent dive destinations,” said Biazon.
