Two party-list lawmakers have been making the headlines these past few months for being at the forefront of investigations at the House of Representatives, giving rise to talk that they might be interested in running for senator in the 2022 elections.
Anakalusugan party-list Rep. Mike Defensor and SAGIP party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta gained prominence for consistently grilling ABS-CBN executives during the network’s franchise hearings from May to July this year. However, they continued to take an active role in legislative investigations even after the Kapamilya network’s franchise bid was denied.
Perhaps in part due to Defensor and Marcoleta’s active presence in congressional inquiries, some Facebook groups have surfaced to support their possible senatorial bid.
The public Facebook group “Mike Defensor for Senator” has over 35,000 members. Meanwhile, two groups claim to be the hub of Marcoleta’s supporters. The “Rodante Marcoleta for Senator” Facebook group has over 110,000 members while the “Rodante Marcoleta for Senator Movement” Facebook group boasts of a 24,000-strong membership.
The three Facebook groups were created between May to July this year, at the height of the ABS-CBN franchise saga.
There’s no word yet from either Defensor or Marcoleta if they intend to run for higher office in 2022. What’s sure, though, is they won’t be out of the limelight anytime soon– or at least while Alan Peter Cayetano is House Speaker.
