Bilib kay Lord! PDP-Laban, NPC, party-list execs back Velasco for Speaker
Five leaders of different political groups in the House of Representatives have thrown their support behind the Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco’s bid to become the next House Speaker.
Officials of PDP-Laban, Nationalist People’s Coalition, the party-list coalition and the Northern Luzon Alliance called Velasco “the best choice to lead the House of Representatives in the 18th Congress” in a manifesto dated June 25, 2019, a copy of which was obtained by Politiko.
“We are firmly convinced that REPRESENTATIVE LORD ALLAN JAY Q. VELASCO is imbued with the leadership qualities to steer and unite the entire House of Representatives in the passge of crucial legislative reforms in support of the legislative agenda of PRESIDENT RODRIGO ROA DUTERTE in order to safeguard the country’s economic gains and social progress,” the manifesto read.
It was signed by PDP-Laban executive vice president and Pampanga Rep. Aurelio Gonzales, party-list coalition president and 1-PACMAN party-list Rep. Mikee Romero, Ilocos Sur Rep. Kristine Singson Meehan of the Northern Luzon Alliance, and Rizal Rep. Michael John Duavit and Valenzuela City Rep. Weslie Gatchalian of NPC.
The five lawmakers signed the manifesto on the same day Duterte announced he will no longer be endorsing anyone for Speaker.
In a speech in Malacañang, the President said he is leaving it up to lawmakers to decide who should win the speakership race.
“Sabi ko, ‘Sila na lang. Kayo na lang. Ako ang susunod sa inyo. Bakit ilagay ninyo sa akin ‘yang problema na? Maski sinong Speaker diyan, komportable man ako. Basta Pilipino lang, okay lang sa akin’. So we’ll have to — you have to decide,” he said during the oath taking of new government officials.
Aside from Velasco, two other politikos are vying to become the next Speaker: Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez and Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano.
