The prospect of President Duterte becoming the running mate of his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio if she runs for president in 2022 got another shot in the arm.
The President’s former assistant and now Senator Bong Go has expressed support for the Duterte-Duterte tandem in the event the father and daughter decide to seek the two highest positions in government in the next elections.
“Kung ako ang tatanungin, of course, susuportahan ko po ‘yan dahil naniniwala po ako kay Pangulong Duterte at kay Mayora Sara,” he said in a statement.
It was Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo who first broached the idea of the President possibly running alongside his daughter in the next presidential elections. Panelo, the former spokesman of Duterte, said the opposition will surely be defeated if the proposed Duterte-Duterte presidential ticket pushes through.
Under the Constitution, the President is mandated to serve a six-year term and is not eligible for reelection.
Although he supported the proposed Duterte-Duterte tandem, the President’s former aide refused to further talk about politics. He said addressing the coronavirus pandemic should be the first priority for now.
“Sa ngayon napakaaga pa pong pag-usapan ang pulitika, unahin muna natin ang pandemya baka kung ‘di tayo makalagpas sa pandemya, wala tayong pulitikang pag-uusapan,” Go said.
“Wag muna tayo mag-usap ng pulitika, napakatagal pa ‘yang pulitikang ‘yan at ‘di pa po makakatulong ‘yan sa panahong ito. Importante po malagpasan natin ito,” he said.
