The country’s leader should consider receiving coronavirus vaccine in public to boost confidence in the safety of the vaccines.

The latest appeal was made by Dr. Tony Leachon to President Duterte who has preferred to get vaccinated in the buttocks instead of his arm.

“I hope President Duterte would consider being vaccinated in public using the deltoid area to inform, influence, and inspire the Filipino people,” Leachon tweeted on Thursday, Jan. 28.

Leachon, former special adviser of the national task force against COVID-19, said the President’s public vaccination could help counter hesitancy towards the vaccine.

“He’s an extremely popular leader who can add value to reduce vaccine hesitancy,” he said.

Leachon made a pitch for the President’s vaccination in public, saying there was not much time to
to educate the public on the vaccination program.

“Based on best global practices , national leaders/famous personalities lead vaccination programs using deltoid area as site of inoculation. His influence is extremely important at present,” he said in another tweet.

President Duterte earlier volunteered to get vaccinated on camera but later changed his mind. He now prefers to get the vaccine in private since he wants it injected in his buttock area instead of his upper arm.

In a recent Pulse Asia survey, nearly half of Filipinos are reportedly unwilling to get vaccinated after expressing concerns about the safety of the vaccines.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has so far given emergency approval for the use of the COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer and AstraZeneca.
