Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa believes former Calauan, Laguna mayor Antonio Sanchez “deserves a second chance” despite being a convicted rapist and murderer.

Dela Rosa, who previously headed the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), supported Sanchez’s impending release due to a new law increasing the good conduct time allowance for inmates and a Supreme Court ruling for its retroactive application.

“[If] it is determined by the Board of Pardon(s) and Parole that he deserved that commutation, then why not?” he told ANC Wednesday (August 20).

Sanchez was sentenced to seven terms of reclusion perpetua or 40-year imprisonment over the rape and murder of University of the Philippines Los Baños student Eileen Sarmenta and the killing of her boyfriend Allan Gomez in June 1993.

Dela Rosa, who was also a former chief of the Philippine National Police, quoted BuCor officers as saying that Sanchez’s has transformed into a good man inside the New Bilibid Prison.

“Nakikita nila na nagpapalda na nga daw, so changed man na talaga siya, changed man,” he said. “Bumait na, hindi na siga.”

In 2010, P1.5 million worth of shabu was caught inside a statue of Virgin Mary inside Sanchez’s cell. A flat screen TV and airconditioning unit were also seized from him during a raid in 2015.
