House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano seems to be waving the white flag after Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte openly expressed support for his rival for the speakership, Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco.
House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez on Sunday (October 11) said the term sharing agreement for the speakership will be honored.
“I assure my esteemed colleagues that the gentleman’s agreement will be honored after the approval of the national budget for 2021 on third and final reading on Friday, October 16,” he said in a statement.
“We will respect the term-sharing agreement and ensure a smooth transition of leadership in the House of Representatives,” Romualdez added.
The Leyte lawmaker’s camp later issued an updated statement without the assurance on honoring the term sharing agreement. His latest remarks focused on setting aside politics to focus on the passage of the proposed 2021 national budget.
There are reports that Velasco’s camp plan to hold a session on Monday, October 12, to elect him as Speaker. This is a day before the House convenes again for a special session called for by President Rodrigo Duterte to pass the general appropriations bill.
Velasco flew to Davao on October 9 to meet with Sara. Politiko reported that the presidential daughter has been making calls and messaging political party leaders to support the Marinduque lawmaker’s bid to replace Cayetano as Speaker.
