The National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) on Tuesday (Nov. 24) expressed its sadness of the passing of Senior Assistant State Prosecutor Juan Pedro “JP” Navera who put in jail “the butcher,” retired Army Gen. Jovito Palparan.
“Yes, there are still ‘a few good men’. We need more JPs. Even if only to mitigate the image of lawyers who are a disgrace to the profession and an embarrassment to society,” the NUPL said in a statement.
Navera led government prosecutor’s in securing last year the conviction of Palparan over the 2006 disappearance of University of the Philippines (UP) students Karen Empeno and Sherlyn Cadapan.
The NUPL, the legal counsel of the families of the missing students, owed Navera and his prosecution team “for putting the Butcher behind bars.”
“We were awed how he shattered Gen. Palparan’s testimony to smithereens on cross,” it said.
“It was a model even contrived moot courts in law school cannot match,” it added.
